Busy shaking out the dust from our gear from last year

While the Way Place was sitting in a garden in Carmel Valley, there was an opportunity to watch the sun move around the structure. The impression that it gave to one of the observers, “There are so many beautiful individual images on the canvas panels it is amazing. It is like hundreds of paintings stretched over the 3-d frame creating a totally encompassing visual experience.”

Right There, our designer, movie auteur and carpenter extraordinaire has built 2 pyramids to house the exterior lights.

The final addition to the Way Place is the flooring. A circle (10′ in diameter) made of burlap has been painted black. On to the burlap, an assortment of random-shaped, cream-colored carpet pieces are laid out to look like a sandstone terrace.

The Way Place was dismantled yesterday and is packed up and ready to be placed on the truck. On Friday, August 27th, it will start its journey to Black Rock City. We don’t know where are are going to be placed on the Playa. But when you find us, we’ll be happy to see you.

Way Place Peak

As the late afternoon sun filtered through the trees in a garden deep in Carmel Valley, energetic members of the Unintelligent Design Society made the first full test build of the Way Place. Since that evening in late November when Mark pulled out a scale drawing of a pyramid from his back pocket to Ellen’s focused vision of the painted panels, this build surprised us all. To stand or sit inside the Way Place, to wander around the exterior and see the flow of the symbols, the depth of the colors, the substantial feel of the space sent a ripple of excitement through us all.

Our Fond Objects became Other’s Treasures

The Unintelligent Design Society gathered up those objects that we once found useful and interesting but recently were gathering dust in the back of our closets, cupboards, garages and storage units. Last Saturday, OK generously offered her garage and driveway for a very successful garage sale.

We did alot of shopping and swapping amongst the membership. Fortunately, there were many shoppers who spent a dollar here and some quite a few dollars for a few special items. The fund raising for The Way Place was a great success.

Way Place Build Carmel

Our Pyramid Builder traveled from afar, bearing the skeletal form of the Way Place. Local UDS members gathered at the Studio to crawl about on the floor, measuring and jessoing. The boys with their muddlers work feverishly on erecting the poles. After a few hours of dedicated work, we gathered at E’s for noshes, delicious Mojito’s by the Dalai Alan. A last minute dinner arrival was Trickster who know stands regally on the stone patio.

Mark’s inspiration is moving into physical reality. Meeting with Kira, Ellen, Alan, Karen, Chris and Domain, we discuss the significance of Toblerone and 14 sections. The pyramid will have a 14′ base on each side with the equilateral triangles of 7 feet of PVC piping. Each triangle have a canvas panel that is painted white on the exterior with a hieroglyphic. The interior panels will be painted a multi-color. With a lighting system, to be determined, the W.O.W will glow as a beacon on the dark playa.

Ok, so Domain hasn’t had too much practice in using her new camera. I’ll try to keep my fingers out of the lens in future.

Ocean Breezes

As the salt-tinged winter winds blew across Carmel Bay, the atmosphere was cheery inside the dining room of the Sea Harvest at the Crossroads late yesterday afternoon. The gathering celebrated Karen Gelff’s work that evokes the balmy breezes of the Caribbean and Cabo. Vibrant colors, a mixture of textures and patterns in her portrayals of swaying palm trees on long white beaches, singing birds, swimming fish and happy octupi surrounded us.

Well, it wasn’t that stormy but just a little rainy and windy for the Center of Photographic Art opening of the latest exihibit, “Luminosity – the Art of ImageMaking” featuring our august UDS member Bimbi, known in the off-Playa world as Robin Robinson. UDS members turned out to support the creative effort with Ellen, Alan, Chris, Karen, Joel and Lance. Tomorrow night, the tribe will celebrate Karen Gelff’s opening at Sea Harvest at the Crossroads.

Snow on the Playa

El Guapo has seen the snow covered Playa and wonders where the beautiful city has gone? It has just been temporarily re-located. Our city is hiding in the rafters of my garage, in Alan’s basement, in Chris’s backyard and Ellen’s notebook and thousands of other sheds, barns and warehouses. Mostly the hidden city remains inside of us, still beating out the tribal rhythms of joyism. Let the Playa sleep for awhile before the ruckus begins again…. Mark
